Musicians' questions
Do I register the music, the lyrics or both?
You can register the complete work (composition and lyrics, indicating co-authorship where applicable) by providing the score or audio files (mp3, wav). Remember that on Safe Creative you can also protect your earlier sketches or drafts, as well as separately register elements such as cover art or the lyrics themselves to use them in other contexts.
Does this replace a collecting society?
No. Safe Creative gives you proof of authorship with a certain date and lets you self-manage your rights, but it doesn't collect royalties for public use the way collecting societies do. They are compatible.
How do I make each band member's contribution clear?
By inviting the co-authors to the registration, so that each person's contribution to the composition is recorded.
Don't I already have the rights without registering?
Yes, under the Berne Convention they arise on creation. Registration is voluntary and provides the dated proof to demonstrate it.
Is it useful before uploading the song to platforms?
Yes, that's precisely the best moment: register before distributing or uploading to platforms so you have prior proof of authorship.
