Aquella noche, los padres de Arlette se habían ido a un concierto y le habían dejado en casa con Samson su gran danés. Samson era grande y noble pero a pesar de que se veía muy imponente, era uno de los perros de mejor talante alrededor y era una dulce y cariñosa mascota.

She heard a sound like a plop ... plop ... and another ... and another ....; she walked around the house looking to see what was leaking; entered the kitchen the sink faucet was not leaking; she went to the bathroom and found that the sound was coming from the shower; opened the curtain and there was Samson hanging by his collar to the shower's hook, exorbitant eyes and snout in frozen rictus; dripping red ink and on the wall she read: written in red ink "humans can lick too.".

Anaïs tenía quince años; vivía con sus padres y su perro Zoro en un barrio de Montmartre, en la calle Saint-Vincent; era una calle peatonal tranquila que sin embargo se encontraba a unos metros de las callejuelas animadas del barrio. La casa era antigua, espaciosa y comfortable con vistas a un patio con jardín. Desde la ventana de su recamara Anaïs podía ver la basilica del Sacré Cœur situada en lo alto de la loma; era un destacado edificio religioso caracterizado por su mezcla de arquitectura románica y bizantina.
