After slavers murder the child's father and sell his mother before his very eyes, he expects a similar future for himself, if not worse.
After the marshal saves the boy, they return home to the compound. The gentle yellow-haired eight-year-old with robin's egg-blue eyes immediately captures everyone's hearts and is accepted into the small clan of pioneers. They are all surprised when Money Penny declares he wants to become a mountain man and asks Levi Johnson to be his mentor. Despite the reservations of his new parents, Beaver accepts his request.
