The harsh winter has past and although the land is covered in snow the temperatures have softened. Everything seemed to return to a quiet normality after a long winter full of chaos and hard work. Now Rusty Steel and Angus McFarlin finished curing their cold-water bever pelts ready to sell at this season’s market.
One early morning when they see smoke near the compound in the middle of the Rocky Mountains Levi and Rusty grab their guns and head out to warn the trespassers. They were only a half-day’s walk from a large Crow stronghold and if the local Indians see them first, they will do more than shoo them off their land—they will undoubtedly kill and scalp them.
As soon as the mountain man mentor and his apprentice near the campsite the intruders open fire with intentions of killing Levi and Rusty. It quickly turns into a battle for their lives. One of the newspapers in Boise claimed gold was found above the Yellowstone Valley and every able-bodied man with a pick and shovel were headed for Rusty’s Mountain.
