About the work
This audiovisual fiction project, LISA, reveals the mystery and magnetism of the little-known Lisa Gherardini, model for the world's most famous portrait, La Gioconda, and its youthful version, The Mona Lisa of Isleworth or Earlier Mona Lisa. In the convulsed Florence of the Quattrocento, Lisa fascinated artists and powerful men, resisted accusations and intrigues, embodying a subtle alchemy of audacity and fidelity. Woman destined for an anonymous existence, she continues to accompany us, until today, immortalized by Leonardo da Vinci in two iconic portraits. Little has been done so far about her unique personality. Our audiovisual project LISA (film or series) reveals her passionate and unknown secret life. LISA's action takes place during the last two years of the life of Lisa Gherardini, who died in July 1542, in Florence. It shows how and why her singular personality and wit exerted an exceptional fascination on the artists and powerful men she met.
We know Lisa Gherardini from portraits of her commissioned to Leonardo da Vinci by Francesco del Giocondo, her husband, and by Giuliano II de' Medici, her childhood friend. Of aristocratic origins, but without fortune, married at a very young age to a rich and influential silk merchant, Francesco del Giocondo, she experiences passions of a very different nature: conjugal love with her husband, the drive of desire that fuels Giuliano and the complicity depth that he shares with Leonardo.
Freethinking, Lisa breaks the assigned molds of woman and mother, taking risks when confronting religious obscurantism and political corruption, under the calm appearance of her iconic smile and behind a veil of discretion that did not allow her to guess her internal tensions and the strength of her character. Lisa takes political, social, and cultural risks in overcoming her status as her wife and in the torrent of events of her relatively long life in her time. Surrounded by tensions in family life with the powerful new rich Giocondo, and even economic tensions with her own lineage, she explores her desire for knowledge inspired by an exceptional mentor, Leonardo, and by the need for freedom shared by both. Intimately linked to the two portraits of her, Lisa exerted a transcendent magnetism and a complex attraction that remain powerful until today. Shortly before her death, Lisa relives her existential journey. Intellectually restless, she remembers how she participated with Giuliano II de Medici, Machiavelli, Agostino Vespucci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Raphael and Da Vinci, among others, in the artistic and philosophical explosion of the convulsive Florence of the s. XVI, divided between the supporters of the fanatic Savonarola and the tyranny of the Medici.
Pioneering in many aspects, this exceptional Florentine symbolizes the contradictions of a new feminine profile at the dawn of the Modern Age. After the LISA audiovisual project, we will see her portraits with different eyes.
