About the work

This document describes a comprehensive technical/experimental proposal for investigating different options to leach out the phosphorus present in certain types of iron ore and related materials. Two main workflows are described, one in which leaching chemicals are used and another where microorganisms are employed. The idea is to test several ways (dynamic or static) of contacting iron ore substrates (run-of-mine, concentrates, tailings) with the leaching agents (chemical or biological), in order to simulate typical conditions that may be found in the mining or ore beneficiation operations. In this way, +1,100 tests are to be performed, in order to encompass the widest range of experimental conditions of interest for the process. This value proposal also includes aspects of the latest technology, particularly in what has to do with the application of biotechnology to face the problem of bioleaching of phosphorus present in iron ores. Thus, we present novel aspects such as the bioprospecting of phosphorus solubilizing microorganisms in different microenvironments of the mine and the application of environmental DNA massive sequencing technologies to carry out metagenomic studies, which allow the identification of biomarkers and ecosystemic trends that promote bioleaching and allow in-depth monitoring of these processes from an industrial stand-point. Finally, the results obtained will be used to develop conceptual process flow diagrams, lay-outs and preliminary economic assessment (capex/opex) for the pilot-plat implementation of the more feasible processes, as identified in the experimental part of the project, emphasizing the possibilities of recovering phosphorus co-products as well as dephosphorized iron ore.

The idea is to test several ways (dynamic or static) of contacting iron ore substrates (run-of-mine, concentrates, tailings) with the leaching agents (chemical or biological), in order to simulate typical conditions that may be found in the mining or ore beneficiation operations. In this way, a comprehensive state-of-the-art study and +660 individual tests are to be performed, divided into eight work packages or sub-projects, in order to encompass the widest range of experimental conditions of interest for the process. Additionally, a logical framework based on go/no go break-point has been implemented, to help the client to decide whether or not to continue with specific worklines in case the results are not satisfactory. This value proposal also includes aspects of the latest technology, particularly in what has to do with the application of biotechnology to face the problem of bioleaching of phosphorus present in iron ores.
