About the work
Adam Grizz James and Brick Hammer live quietly deep in the Rocky Mountains. The only other humans were Crow Indians, Grizz’s friends, and the Blackfeet Indians, who were often enemies. High on the mountain, their pal Jimmy White Bear lived in a cave with a grizzly bear.
One fine morning in late summer, they heard distant gunfire from their dug-out cabin where the old mountain man had lived for the last thirty years. The reports came from a valley that those who lived in the mountains knew too well. It was the last refuge for the migrating buffalo. As they were being slaughtered on the plains, a relatively small number made their yearly pilgrimage on their way north to Southern Canada and visited the secret pastures. They seemed to know instinctively this was a safe place away from the slaughter.
Will the buffalo killers wipe out the herds that graced their mountains, or would the intruders die at the hands of hostile Indians—or would Grizz and Hammer interfere with their mountain man friend Jimmy White Bear? They knew if the buffalo were all killed, the Indians would have no food source and would be pushed onto reservations, putting the mountain men’s way of life in jeopardy. In the future, would there be no wilderness for them to live in nor wild game to hunt? Would they be able to stop the inevitable, or would the civilization machine run them all over with what the government called progress.
