About the work
Since her childhood, Maria desired to swim in the ocean. When she became a peasant mother, she was force to give up her dream. Throughout a long life span, family duties, poverty and a frail health always set her away from the ocean.
At the end of her life, her granddaughter Sofia gives her a seashell so she could listen to the sounds of the ocean. The shell nurtures in Maria a renewed hope for life and she asks her children to take her on a trip to the beach before she passes away.
After a whole day travelling, she fulfills her dream. However, at Maria´s funeral, we discover that she never made the trip and that the mysterious narrator telling the story was Sofia. Was the seashell a means to make the imaginary journey of an unfulfilled desire or did she find eternal peace in the heaven of family memory? The answer lies in the heart of the audience.
