A comedy psychic detective, Vergil (eccentric, twenties) solves cases using "bibliomancy" — taking random passages from books as predictions. First, Vergil surveilles someone’s spouse to see if they are cheating. Then, referring to Nostradamus’ quatrain, “The foreign guard will betray the fortress/ Hope and shadow of a higher marriage/ Guard deceived, fort seized in the press,” Vergil finds that he "is" the betraying “foreign guard” and ends up bedding the spouse! But she has arranged to be discovered by her husband (Vergil is “deceived”). Thus, Vergil has, perforce, proved that she is indeed cheating (with himself) and goes on to suggest a “higher marriage” between the two spouses. Similar predictions structure the rest of Series 1 which is concerned with a much more significant case.
