Por um lado, Albert Einstein, autor da Teoria Geral da Relatividade, é reconhecido como o melhor cientista da humanidade, marcando um antes e um depois da física: Newton e Einstein. Por outro lado, persistem dúvidas razoáveis sobre sua orientação religiosa, o que levam a fazer estas perguntas: Quais eram as crenças religiosas de Einstein? Qual foi o grande problema existencial de Einstein?
De um modo geral, Einstein assumiu uma posição religiosa difusa (entre ateísmo, agnosticismo e judaísmo), devido a suas dúvidas sobre a existência de Deus.
Note-se que, apesar de sua natureza conflituosa e rebelde, ele era cauteloso e moderado, evitando ao máximo expor sua posição religiosa, o que aumentou esse mistério. O certo é que Einstein não deu muita importância à religião, negou o Deus judaico-cristão e aceitou o panteísta, concebido por Spinoza. No entanto, ele viveu sofrendo um grande problema existencial, ao qual não conseguiu obter respostas definitivas.
