About the work
The action is located in the legendary Russian city of Kitezh, located opposite Lake Svetloiar, in the thirteenth century. Fevronia, a young woman who lives in the forest in communion with the isolated nature of all human contact, comes to the aid of Vsevolod, son of the Grand Duke of Kitezh, wounded by a bear during a hunt in the forest. The boy is captivated by the wisdom and purity of the young woman and, without revealing his true identity, decides to handcuff her. Shortly after the couple has arrived at Kitezh the Younger to celebrate the betrothal, the city is harassed by the Tatar troops and Fevronia is imprisoned along with the vagabond Kutierma. This one is forced to guide the invaders to Kitezh la Grande. The army of Kitezh confronts them but is defeated and Vsevolod, their commander, dies in combat. Attending the prayers of Fevronia, a very thick fog rises and the city becomes invisible to the enemies, hidden in the waters of the lake, while its bells do not stop ringing. The Tartars, in panic, flee, and Fevronia, lost in the forest, is guided by the image of Vsevolod to the new Kitezh, located in another world, surely paradise: "Here there are no tears or pain but sweetness and happiness, eternal bliss. "
