In a post-apocalyptic future in the middle of the Argentine Pampa,a handful of people are left trying to reconstruct a primitive social form, but no cows are around as it used to be. In fact, one of the paradoxes of the novel is that this end of the world in full swing has its origin in a bovine disease, whose visible symptom is a deep state of sadness that precedes death.
