About the work
Buildacode is an experimental tool for sound creation, which seeks the integration of object’s manipulation into a visual programming environment for real-time sound creation/programming. My main interest was to develop a platform for people that with or without previous programming knowledge, would be able to enjoy tangible sound coding through the manipulation of friendly objects (soft, large, cosy and colourful) instead of lines of incomprehensible code. Although its first intended to be used by kids, anyone can enjoy it!
It’s basically a tangible Pure Data coding tool. It’s made out of 24 foam cubes. Three sides of the cubes have a different color and a stitched drawing that translates a PD symbol. The opposite sides of each drawing has a Reactivision code. When you place the cubes in front of a camera, the program recognizes it and sends the information to Processing that analyzes it and sends it to PD via OSC. It also has a visual feedback in other to make the creative process more comprehensive.
You can make MIDI sounds, change instruments, create sequencers, oscillators, noise and filters among others through the combination of cubes and movements.
