Shipwreck
You thought I was a rover
Snugging in your arms.
Drank away all my sorrows
and closing all the bars.
One day you closed your heart
and that took me to the Road.
I’m sure you’ll miss me, baby,
I left you waiting for more.
My days on land are over,
the trouble’s been delayed.
Wine, women, songs and roving,
I’m out before it’s too late.
Last night I enrolled starboard of a ship called ‘The Horny Maid’
Her armless, legless captain’s always got a bad day.
We’re sailing going nowhere,
Will I know how to get back ashore
When all I’ve ever done in my life
Is drink from this sea and its salt?
I left my life behind me
And I don’t care at all.
The wind blows hard, the waves are hitting on my hull.
On starry night like this when standing on the prow
Rejoicing in my loneliness I’m the happiest man on the world.
We’re sailing going nowhere,
Will I know how to get back ashore
When all I’ve ever done in my life
Is drink from this sea and its salt?
Someday I’ll steer my own ship
Having no fear of singing too loud,
And it will be the love of my life,
I’ll call it the HMS Proud.
