About the work

This work veers somewhat from the other works in the Vampire Petals series. However I do include it, because it involves dead leaves and chewed gum in Assemblage to create a totally new perspective of the materials in an artistic expression.

ENTICED is also accompanied by a haiku verse - attached to the work by a hinge - that is intentionally ambiguous, leaving the interpretation of the work up to the viewer.

Materials used for ENTICED:

Eucalyptus leaves, coffee pod aluminum foil, metal pins, rubber rings, chewed gum, acrylic glitter color, wallpaper glue on double boards.

About the creator

“Unwanted Unseen Unheard - Here I am”

I am the innovator of two unique techniques, whereby dried flower petals and chewed gum are used to create completely new visual interpretations. The nuanced color variations of the petals are my pallette. The chewed gum is used in conjunction with the petals to create effects. I often use other discard in my works too.

I concocted these techniques in 2021 and have continued using them to create artworks since then. Petals (rose, tulip, daffodil, narcissus, & many more) are dried naturally, not pressed.

Before using them for the artwork, a few handfuls of petals are given new life by placing them in a deep box which is covered with a damp cloth - without it touching the petals - for a few hours.

When the petals are pliable, I use wallpaper glue to apply the petals onto the board/canvas or any other surface I choose for the artwork. Once dried, I apply a glaze to strengthen the whole surface and seal the process and prevent the petals from becoming brittle. Several layers of petals are applied using the same steps.

The chewed gum is left to dry and harden completely. When I need to use it, I pull/cut off pieces which I soften by placing them in my armpit or a warm surface. Once pliable, I form the shape I want to create for my artwork, and either paint it using oils or acrylics before I apply it onto the completed petal background, or after. It depends on the shape and effect I want to create. If the need arises, the gum is covered in petals too.

Each artwork in this series is accompanied by a verse that resembles a haiku, which is intentionally ambiguous, free to be interpreted by the viewer. This verse is written in paint on a small rectangular wooden discard (covered by the same color petals used for the artwork) and attached by a hinge to the bottom right corner of the artwork. It can thus be flipped back, out of view.

I sign these artworks on a dried leaf attached to the back of the artwork.

I named this series of artworks, the Vampire Petals. They die, are raised from the dead, die, raised from the dead...
