The 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival in pictures

  • We take a tour of the festival with some of the stars who paid a visit.
  • The glamour and the active participation of the local public as spectators set this festival apart from many others.

One of the greatest appeals of international film festivals is, without a doubt, getting to see the stars and celebrities up close. The San Sebastián International Film Festival is renowned precisely for fostering that intimacy between audiences, fans, filmmakers, and stars of all kinds. Here is a quick look at some of the celebrities we managed to photograph. Naturally, this isn’t everyone, but it highlights some of the biggest names.

The early days with Jeremy Irons, Naomi Watts, Orlando Bloom…

One of the first stars to arrive was Orlando Bloom, who quickly went inside the hotel upon arrival, but later spent time signing autographs and greeting the crowd. Jeremy Irons attended alongside producer David Puttnam to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of The Mission. He posed for the press sporting an eye-catching pair of sunglasses and signed autographs for people gathered outside the Hotel María Cristina.

Another headliner, Naomi Watts, also slipped quickly into the hotel upon arrival, but was warm and playful later during the official photocalls. If you want to read more about her appearance at the festival, we recommend checking out this article.

Prior to Brad Pitt’s arrival, we were also able to photograph, among others,Bill Skarsgård, Lena Olin (who accompanied Naomi as part of the team behind The Housewife), Jaime Lorente, and Javier Cámara. Upon arrival, we caught a fleeting glimpse of Rami Malek, whom we were able to photograph much better in the days that followed. View photo gallery:

Mid-festival madness with the arrival of Brad Pitt, Jesse Eisenberg, and many more…

From the start, it was clear that the festival’s biggest draw would be Brad Pitt, who was presenting the film Heart of the Beast. And he certainly earned his welcome: upon arriving, he spent a full half hour signing autographs, taking photos with fans, and posing for cameras. The official photocall was packed with photographers, but we managed to get in, and frenzy truly erupted on the red carpet, where he spent over an hour greeting people. It’s hard to say how many photos were taken during those moments, but easily tens of thousands. His partner, Inés de Ramón, didn’t go unnoticed either, starring in a few fun moments we’ve included in the gallery.

The middle days also featured Rami Malek and Jesse Eisenberg. Malek spent a considerable amount of time signing along the red carpet with his trademark demeanor and presence. Jesse Eisenberg, seemingly quite shy, showed immense patience with the photographers. Once at the press conference, he relaxed and spoke passionately about his film and how much it meant to tell that story, The Debut, which is largely autobiographical.

We also photographed Ricardo Darín, who was the face of this year’s official festival poster, and we dropped by the Lola Salvador Screenplay Awards ceremony hosted by the DAMA management entity. In addition, many others walked the red carpet and shared touching gestures in solidarity with communities and individuals facing violence and persecution.

The closing days of the festival and miscellaneous highlights…

The festival’s surprise film was Danny Boyle’s Ink. Fun fact: our humble photographer was tasked with safeguarding and delivering to his hotel the Silver Shell he won for Shallow Grave nearly 30 years ago. But Danny Boyle was not the only celebrity walking the red carpets during those days. Among the many in attendance, we have especially fond memories of the guests at the Audi Future Stories award presentation alongside director and screenwriter Rodrigo Olmedo, which we covered in our previous article.

We’ve also added photos taken both in the days leading up to the festival and during official arrivals and photocalls, including Valeria Varbanova, the crew of El Mal Padre, Miren Gaztañaga (the incoming director of the Film Festival), José Luis Rebordinos (the current director stepping aside for Miren), Abril Zamora, Werner Herzog (Donostia Award recipient), Paweł Pawlikowski, Alba Sáez, Laura García Alonso, Marina Salas, Miguel Ángel Muñoz, director and screenwriter Rodrigo Olmedo, Gabriela Andrada, Lucía Carballo, Betsy Túrnez, the crew of El Castillo, Feng Qi, Ah Biao, Zheyan Li from Bian Jing, and many others.

The 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival was a resounding success in both audience turnout and star power. We look forward to returning for the next edition, which will celebrate the festival’s milestone 75th anniversary.
