Screenwriter and director Rodrigo Olmedo has won the sixth edition of Audi Future Stories with his work, “El Triplete.” The short film was premiered within the framework of the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival.

Among the many screenplays submitted, the jury selected one that was registered on Safe Creative. The script was produced and brought to the big screen with none other than Karra Elejalde and Kándido Uranga in the lead roles. Playing the antagonist and rounding out the main cast was Biel Durán. Kike Maíllo co-directed the film alongside Rodrigo, who served as the main director.

An Audi Award for the Screenwriters of Future Films

This unique award, sponsored by Audi (the festival’s official automotive partner), has celebrated its sixth edition and is already preparing for its seventh. It aims to discover new talent among emerging screenwriters by producing the winning script into a short film. It is essential to remember that screenwriters are the ones who write the story we later see and hear on screen. These awards offer a real, practical opportunity to turn those dreams into reality alongside top-tier professional directors and stars.

“El Triplete” tells a touching story about veteran pétanque players living in a nursing home. Just days before the pétanque championship where they hope to complete a hat-trick, having won the previous two editions, their third teammate, Ezequiel, dies. Faced with the indifference of the world around them, the two old players take possession of their friend’s ashes, along with a brand-new Audi that doesn’t belong to them, embarking on a peculiar “road short film.” The story connects us with nostalgia and the lives of two individuals largely forgotten by society.

Through a humorous lens, the short film portrays the everyday drama faced by older adults dealing with loss and societal indifference. Written and directed with respect and obvious affection, Rodrigo Olmedo delivers a solid, heartwarming story that moves and entertains in equal measure, primarily because it allows us to empathize with the characters and their unique way of finding belonging and purpose.

Surrounded by Stars and Industry Professionals

The presentation event, packed with film and television stars, brought young talent and veteran actors together on the same carpet. We had the chance to chat with them after the screening. For instance, when asked if he worried about finding fewer roles as he gets older, Karra Elejalde jokingly remarked that it might be more of a concern for his friend Kándido Uranga, but added that almost every film has a place for that crucial family figure: the grandparents.

Red carpet

“Shooting the short film was an exciting journey,” Rodrigo Olmedo told us. “From bringing the idea on paper to life with such a large professional crew, to directing two greats like Karra and Kándido (which was a dream come true), and working side-by-side with Kike Maíllo, from whom it’s impossible not to learn every single day on set. And, of course, being able to present it at the San Sebastián Festival was a deeply thrilling and rewarding experience thanks to the warm reception the film received. Without a doubt, it was the perfect finale to this journey.”

Most importantly, what this award proves is that we need to value screenwriters far more. Without them, there is no story. How the story is told, its coherence, and character development are all critical. Without a strong narrative foundation, a film is unlikely to endure or make an impact. Awards like this help uncover the screenwriters behind future feature films. Figures like Amenábar, Medem, Lucas, or Spielberg all started with short films, a format that allows creators to demonstrate the quality and potential of their writing and directing.

A Commitment to the Future, Protected by Safe Creative

Safe Creative has become the go-to platform for professionals and enthusiasts in the film industry. On this occasion, we spoke with photographers, screenwriters, and producers who choose the world-leading copyright registration platform to document their creative process as well as register their final works, alongside trademark registration and evidence generation, from sent emails to signed contracts using Safe Creative’s Stamper tools.

For Rodrigo Olmedo, Safe Creative “is the platform where I registered the script for this short film and where I registered the first script I submitted to the contest three years ago […]. I also use it to register other writings, like short stories, since I write outside the film world as well. Regardless of whether I later register certain works in other official registries, I like using Safe Creative because it’s fast and gives you immediate peace of mind that isn’t possible elsewhere.”

Thanks to this award, we hope Rodrigo Olmedo gains widespread recognition and that we soon see his name in the credits of more film productions as both a screenwriter and director. We also hope he continues to trust Safe Creative to protect his present and future works.
