Synopsis:
Esther, a new widow, grapples with the death of her late husband Joshua who was known one way by society and another by her and her family. In the wake of his death, she struggles with the performance of grief and what it means to mourn. During the customary visits from friends and family, her and her children are forced to come to terms with the emotionally and physically abusive man Joshua was.
In the village she is repeatedly blamed for not caring for her husband despite him providing a stable life for them. Thus patriarchal systems cannot be escaped. These customs and societal expectations push this family to the edge despite pride for their cultural heritage.
In the end Esther and her family are put at a crossroads that begets which cycles they will continue and which ones they must break free from.
